New Lawns in Autumn

When do I start a Lawn?

Autumn is the perfect time to begin building your soils up and starting your new garden lawn:

In the more southern capitals such as Sydney, Perth, Adelaide and Melbourne, the harsh (Hot & Dry) summer conditions are subsiding and making way for periods of extended moderate conditions with occasional rain. The most encouraging characteristic arising out of Autumn is the combination of occasional rain periods with warm(ish) nights. This combination allows the lawn plant to use the warmer soil during the night which encourages plant circulation and growth.

Autumn Lawn Jobs List:

  • Sandy Solis require organic matter. Compost material should be added to help build up the soil.
  • Take out weeds with a selective herbicide - don't let the weeds take over and choke out your preferred turf species.
  • Fertilize Fruit Trees with David Grays Citrus & Fruit Tree Fertiliser.
  • Mow lawns more regularly (but not too short!)  Every two weeks would be about the right frequency. This will promote thatching and root growth
  • Water the Lawn more frequently (be careful to abide by local water restriction laws) - this will encourage deeper and stronger roots.
